Have You Come To Say Goodbye?
by Jason Vanderlaan

You come in like the tide –
Slowly, by inches and seconds.

And then, all at once,
Waves are crashing against my shore,
Spraying high and splashing down
On rocks and sand, the back of my hand.

But I’ve watched the sky for years
And come to know a pattern,
The push and pull of things unseen,
The arrival and the retreat.

And I’m not saying you’re the same,
But I can’t chase this thought away:

Are you here to stay
Or will you leave the way you came?
