September Stars
by Jason Vanderlaan

The city lights came out for us tonight,
If that’s the kind of thing you like,
And the smell of anticipation is in the air,
Though I think we both caught a different scent.

You call me by name.

Just imagine, everything in perfect place –
Each grain of sand moves with precision
Beneath our carefree footsteps,

Each crashing wave echoes across the night
As the moon aligns with our shadows
And the sky expands above our heads.

You say my name.

This could be ours for the taking
But I am already taken
By the stars above my head,
However dim they may be.

I’ll buy you a drink tonight
But in the morning this will just be a memory
Fading into the ever retreating past.

You may know my name,
But that doesn’t mean
I can heal you.
